The Conoco brand behind the sign traces back to November 1875, when Isaac Elder Blake founded the Continental Oil and Transportation Company in Ogden, Utah, to distribute kerosene and other refined petroleum products across the western United States. Standard Oil bought the company in 1884, folding it into John D. Rockefeller’s empire, until the U.S. Supreme Court’s 1911 breakup of Standard Oil set Continental Oil - by then known as Conoco - free again as its own company, the very brand that once lit up filling stations like this one all over small-town America.
