Back in the 19th century, an editor at the Miner's Express newspaper proposed a nickname for the growing river town: the "Key City," a nod to Dubuque's position as a gateway for lead mining and Mississippi River trade heading west. The rival Burlington Express had its own tongue-in-cheek suggestion, floating an Irish or Spanish prefix -- "Mon" or "Don" Key City -- but "Key City" stuck, and old-timers still use it as a point of hometown pride today.
