Marquette High School in Bellevue, Iowa opened its doors in 1957, part of a broader consolidation of Catholic high schools across the Dubuque Archdiocese in the late 1950s. Ground broke on the new building in April of that year, and it was finished and dedicated by Archbishop Leo Binz that October, opening with an initial enrollment of just 189 students — a number that grew to a peak of 318 by 1972. The school takes its name from Father Jacques Marquette, the French Jesuit missionary who, alongside explorer Louis Jolliet, set out in 1673 on an expedition that became the first Europeans to map and document a large stretch of the upper Mississippi River, passing right through the region that would one day become eastern Iowa. Marquette's campus kept growing long after those early years too, adding the Marquette Educational Center and Lynch Auditorium in 1996 and a further expansion with a multipurpose room and parish center completed in 2017.
