Long before it was a place for water parks and riverboats, the Port of Dubuque's harbor did double duty. By the 1880s its northern shore was home to the Iowa Iron Works and later the Dubuque Boat and Boiler Works, which built full-size riverboats right there on the water — making Dubuque one of the busiest shipbuilding spots on the Upper Mississippi. In winter, the same harbor froze over and turned into a giant neighborhood ice rink, with a company called Fischer Ice keeping it cleared after every snowfall for generations of Dubuque kids to skate on.
