Catfish Creek is a real, 21.2-mile stream that winds through Dubuque County on its way to the Mississippi River, draining roughly 9,300 acres across Dubuque, Centralia, Peosta, and Asbury. Its main fork through Swiss Valley Park is an officially designated trout stream, and in 1991 a state preserve was set aside just north of the Mines of Spain to help protect it — making it one of the few places local kids can actually go explore a real, protected Iowa waterway.
