Dubuque has its own real-life hometown hero for girls to look up to. Anna B. Lawther was born in Dubuque in 1872, went to school right there in the city, and grew up to lead the Dubuque County Equal Suffrage Association during Iowa's 1916 suffrage push. After Iowa granted women the vote, she became the state's Democratic National Committeewoman and later served on the state board of education — proof that hometown roots can grow into a career of firsts.
