Dubuque's Municipal Swimming Pool was a real Depression-era achievement. Built in 1937 with help from the federal Works Progress Administration, the 75-by-225-foot pool put 61 laborers to work and became the largest and most expensive publicly built swimming pool in Iowa during that era. The city kicked in $17,000 of its own, and the grand opening featured speeches, diving demonstrations, and a race among local swimmers to christen the new water.
