The 1,439-acre park takes its name from the Spanish land grant given to Julien Dubuque in 1796, who ran a lead-mining and trading operation here after arriving around 1788. The area's archaeological sites document thousands of years of human settlement, from prehistoric Native American communities through mining operations that continued until 1914, and the whole area was named a National Historic Landmark District in 1993.
