The humble drink coaster has a real history behind it: 19th-century pubs first used felt or fabric pieces simply to keep bugs and dust out of an open pint, not to catch condensation. Around 1880, German printer Friedrich Horn developed the first disposable cardboard beermat, and fellow German Robert Sputh soon patented a sturdier wood-pulp version - breweries quickly realized the marketing potential, and coasters have been a barroom fixture (and a collectors item for so-called tegestologists) ever since. This set carries on that century-and-a-half-old bar tradition.
