Just west of Dubuque, Dyersville has its own colorful history worth celebrating on St. Patrick's Day. The town was founded in 1849 by James Dyer, a prosperous English settler who had arrived two years earlier, growing up alongside a community of Bavarian farmers who had settled the surrounding valley back in 1846. Economic panics in 1857 and 1873 pushed many of the original English families out, and German settlers who bought up their land gradually became the town's dominant population. Dyersville built its identity on two very different landmarks: the twin-spired Basilica of St. Francis Xavier, raised through community mortgages in 1888 and elevated to Minor Basilica status in 1956, and a toy-making legacy that began when Fred Ertl Sr. started building scale farm models in 1945, earning Dyersville the title "Farm Toy Capital of the World" and a permanent home in the National Farm Toy Museum. The town later found Hollywood fame too, when a local farm became the set of the 1988 film Field of Dreams.
