Honoring dads with an entire day of recognition is a tradition that took decades to earn official status. It started in 1909, when Sonora Smart Dodd of Spokane, Washington, was inspired by the newly established Mother's Day and pushed local organizations to create a similar celebration honoring fathers, originally suggesting her own father's birthday in June before local ministers settled on the third Sunday of the month instead. The very first Father's Day celebration took place on June 19, 1910, in Spokane, complete with boys wearing roses on their lapels — red for fathers still living, white for those who had passed.
