Contrary to popular legend, Benjamin Franklin never actually proposed the turkey as America's national symbol — that myth traces back to a 1962 New Yorker cartoon. What Franklin really did, in a private letter to his daughter, was gripe that the Great Seal's eagle design "looks more like a Turkey" and call the real eagle "a Bird of bad moral Character" for stealing food from other birds, while praising the turkey as a "true original Native of America." Myth or not, the eagle won out, and it's still soaring proudly on patriotic gear like this one.
