Few Dubuque buildings have a past as storied as the Hotel Julien. It opened in 1839 as the Waples House, was rebuilt and renamed the Julien House in 1854, and reportedly hosted Abraham Lincoln on a visit from nearby Galena. A devastating fire leveled the original building in 1913, and the hotel that stands today was completed in 1915. Along the way it picked up a colorful — if unverified — legend that Chicago mob boss Al Capone once used it as a hideaway, complete with an underground garage to stash his cars. Real history and tall tales like that are exactly what make Dubuque's ghost tours worth taking.
