The joke works because it is not far from the truth of how dogs came to be our companions in the first place. Genetic and archaeological evidence shows dogs were domesticated from a now-extinct population of gray wolves at least 15,000 years ago, and possibly more than 30,000 years ago, likely somewhere in Eurasia - making them the oldest domesticated animal by a wide margin, older even than farming itself. One of the earliest confirmed dog remains, a jawbone found in Spain’s Erralla cave, has been dated to roughly 17,000 years old. Long before dogs were bred to work livestock or guard property, they were already doing the thing this mug celebrates: choosing to stick around humans anyway.
