The humble mug you're holding has a surprisingly long backstory. Archaeologists have traced the earliest drinking mugs all the way back to the Neolithic Stone Age, roughly 10,000 BC, when early people in China and Japan carved crude cups from bone and wood — functional, but with no handle and not exactly comfortable to hold. Pottery mugs came next, hand-shaped and hand-decorated, though their thick walls still made them clunky to drink from. By around 2000 BC, metal mugs made of gold, silver, bronze, and even lead came into fashion, though lead cups in particular were a genuinely bad idea for both health and hot beverages. The real breakthrough arrived around 600 AD in China with the invention of porcelain — thin, light, and equally suited to hot coffee or a cold drink, setting the standard the modern mug still follows today. Even the design world took its turn reinventing the cup: in 1992, the coffee brand Illy broke centuries of tradition by commissioning designer Matteo Thun to create the first artistic espresso cup collection, kicking off an entire era of the mug as a collectible.
