Slipping out of a party without a word is a habit with a surprisingly tangled history. The English first called it "French leave," a phrase that shows up in the Oxford English Dictionary as early as 1751, describing an 18th-century French custom of departing a gathering without formally taking leave of the host. The diarist James Boswell backed this up in 1762, writing that in France "people never took leave," so slipping away quietly simply felt natural there. The French, naturally, saw it differently — by the turn of the 20th century they were calling the exact same move "filer à l'anglaise," or leaving "English style," pinning the habit right back on their neighbors across the Channel.
