Basketball itself owes its existence to a youth-organization gym not unlike the Boys' Club's own. In December 1891, James Naismith was given just 14 days by his boss at the International YMCA Training School in Springfield, Massachusetts, to invent an indoor game rugged New England winters wouldn't allow outside. He banned running with the ball to cut down on roughness, set the goal high so no one could easily guard it, and when there were no boxes handy, a janitor supplied peach baskets instead - giving the new sport of "Basket Ball" its name, and giving youth clubs everywhere, Dubuque's included, one of the most beloved parts of their programming.
