America's very first St. Patrick's Day parade happened way earlier than most people guess - March 17, 1601, in Spanish colonial St. Augustine, Florida, organized by an Irish clergyman named Ricardo Artur to honor the feast day of Ireland's patron saint. The tradition later spread north with homesick Irish soldiers marching in Boston in 1737 and New York City in 1762, and once mid-19th-century Irish immigration surged, cities across the country - Dubuque very much included - made the holiday their own.
