The word behind this bar's name has a history stretching back over 2,500 years. "Magi" traces to ancient Iran, with its earliest known written appearance in Darius the Great's Behistun Inscription around 520 BC, where it referred to a Zoroastrian priest. The magi were a hereditary priestly caste in ancient Persia, and the Greek historian Herodotus described them both as a tribe of the Medes and as a broader sacerdotal class whose influence stretched across Persia, Parthia, and beyond. When the Greeks encountered these Persian priests, they linked the word to supernatural knowledge and esoteric ritual, and by the 5th century BC the Greek terms "mageia" and "magike" covered everything from astrology to alchemy — the direct ancestor of the English words "magic" and "magician."
